Mesmerizing Beauty With Truly Amazing Mechanics
By Clint Bucher
This watch is so beautiful that i find myself in my office just stopping what i'm doing and just staring at my watch and admiring it. There is good reason why I admire my watch so "deeply". Below is a list of reasons why I find this watch so fascinating.a) There is no battery at all in this time piece. This watch has an "Automatic" movement. That means that it is a "kinetic energy" type of watch. Except that unlike it's Japanese competition, this watch has no cheap battery for that kinetic energy to be stored in. No.. this watch is purely mechanical. It stores its energy in its automatic internal winding mechanism. To see this awesome modern marvel of energy containment all you have to do is take the watch off and flip it over and see this mechanical wonder come to life behind a glass window on the back of the watch. It is so cool!!b) The layout of the face/dial: This watch has a chronograph which means that you can time anythiing you want on this built in timer. I use this timer on a daily basis as i time my rests between sets at the gym. The top dial counts the minutes in 1 minute increments in 30 minute never ending cycles. The dial on the left counts the seconds for the general operation of the watch and never stops, which just looks cool as it spins away non-stop. The bottom dial counts the hours up to 12 hours. Then for the left over space on the right hand side of the dial, Bulova put the day and date display. And then over everything is the hour and minute hands that count the actual time. The large second hand only moves when you start the timer so that you can see exactly how long your timed event took right down to the fifth of a second. Very Nice! I think the layout is perfect on this watch. When i time things i find that my eyes automatically look at the top of the watch, and that is right where they put the minute dial so that you can see right away how long your event took. Plus the general layout just looks amazing! It's functional, and beautiful. Really... it is rare when you get form and function working together in perfect harmony.c) The mechanical movement and mechanical functions: Like i said above.. there is no battery in this watch. With that being said, when you push the buttons on the right hand side to start and stop the timer, they are somewhat hard to press. And when you press them down, you really know that you've started or stopped the whole mechanics right down into the inner workings of the watch. It has such a nice "mechanical" feel! You can really feel the watch working thru your fingers when you press on it. And further more.. (And this is huge..) All of the hands start and stop exactly on the intended mark on the dial. The second hand starts and stops directly right on the top dead center of the dial. And the hour and minute hands do exactly the same. And then.. when its time to reset the timer, it does so instantly with the click of the right side bottom button with no waiting like other chronographs i've experienced. I've owned other watches made by Invicta, Citizen and Tissot and this one makes the lesser quality ones seem like incapable pieces of crap. The Tissot obviously is a worthy competitor, but to me its not as beautiful as my Bulova.d) The overall "look" of this on my wrist: To tell you the truth i was a bit disappointed in the color of the dial on the watch when i first got this in the mail. The color looks a bit lighter in real life than it does on Bulova's perfectly lit picture online. The watch on their site appears to have a silver dial, but when mine arrived it had more of a white-ish hue to it. Another discrepency that i found was that the internet site showed more of a matte finish on the metal band, when in reality it has fully pollished band that is bright and shiny. But.. even still, i love the way this watch looks. The sapphire crystal is so deep that when you look into it, it almost like you're looking to water. Plus the size of the dial is perfect. Its not too big like a lot of watches out there. Overall, i think this watch is exceedingly beautiful. Its smooth, sophisticated and masculine.e) The way this watch makes "you" feel. Having such a nice watch on your wrist that also operates so sweetly does make you feel better. This is the first time that i've been this excited about owning something that can't be driven! I enjoy putting this watch on so much that i hate to take it off.. so much so, that i still wear it to bed at night. I can't beleive my wife lets me do that.. Sure it runs about 2 to 3 minutes fast each month. So then i have to turn it back a little. But that's okay because it is strictly mechanical, with no computer and no battery. And with all the qualities that i listed above, i completely forgive it. Plus we can't forget the fact that this watch can really never die. There are no batteries (rechargeable or not) to ever deteriorate. In a few years after the gears loosen up a little and the piece starts to slow a bit, it will actually become more precise! To wrap this review up.... To "me" this watch is perfect. To create something this beautiful, this mechanical with no batteries or computer, this precise with all hands aligning perfectly with their marks, that lets you experice the feel of its inner workings in each engaging click of the buttons, to match modern kinetic energy with old school, timeless spring and gear driven mechanics and with all of those tiny little moving parts inside all wrapped up in this stylish, exquisite little package.. To do all of this for just $1,500.. is nothing short of amazing.Well done Bulova.. I would give you 6 out of 5 stars for a rating if i could..
