Craftmanship and Value in One Fine Package
By W. C Donovan
If you're looking for an acoustic or acoustic/electric guitar with a cutaway that's entirely made of tonewoods for a full sound with a nice bottom end, the Takamine EF340SCGN can't be beat. You simply won't find a guitar with these appointments at this price-point. I used to think acoustic/electric guitars only sounded good when plugged in, and boy was I wrong. I also thought you lost some tone with a cutaway model as opposed to a full-bodied dreadnought. Wrong again.I blew so much money trying to modify my Martin D-16GT (i.e., Grover tuners, bone but and saddle, L.R. Baggs dual-mic pickup) in an attempt to make it sound decent, but it doesn't come close to the sound of this guitar right out of the box. The folks at Martin can learn a lot from Takamine about how to craft quality instruments at an affordable price, and I'll gladly put the EF340SCGN against any high-end Martin, Taylor, Gibson, Alvarez, Guild, or any other American company's acoustic guitar. It'll perform justs as well, or even out-perform, any of them. The guitar itself is worth the purchase, but the top-notch electric pickup is one of the most authentic sounding pickups I've ever heard. Throw in a three-band EQ and a chromatic tuner to boot and you have something truly special here. This is an awesome guitar, and I'll never need to shop for another acoustic as my Martin collects dust...with the exception of buying another EF340SCGN if something should happen to the one I currently own. Highly recommended.

Phenomenal Guitar (1 year later)
By iekau
I've always played Yairi and Martin guitars and love both manufacturers quality and sound. I found a need for an acoustic electric and shopped around for almost a year. I had only been looking at natural spruce tops, when one day I happened to pick this guitar up and found myself unable to put it down. It has a brilliant responsive and accurate sound as well as action that met or exceeded my other acoustics. It was on sale at 799 and I had a 10% coupon - well I left with it. Played for another hour once home. The next day, I plugged it into our Yamaha Clavinova to check the "electric" side of the guitar, and was very pleased yet again. My daughter (keyboard) and I are working again on some songs as the guitar has sparked musical interest again in our home.I was budgeting at 500 -600, but I would recommend saving another 300 and at least giving this handcrafted, quality Japanese beauty a look!A year later (June 2012) and I love this guitar even more. I found myself exploring new genres and am amazed by the sound quality and more so by the ease in which this instrument plays. I've changed the 9v battery twice now and strings this past May. Again the cedar soundboard is amazing and depending on how you are playing is very warm and clear, but also capable of being brilliant and clear as well. Rarely does it need any minor tweeks to the tuning and the on board tuner is perfectly accurate. My daughter downloaded GarageBand to her ipad and we have been mixing a couple of covers that we've been practicing over the past year as well as experimenting with a little writing and self expression. I've been back to the music shops and have played some high end instruments that are 1000 - 2000 more and of course, can find a tonewood spruce that is brighter, but none play more easily.

Crisp and deep sounding, quality guitar
By Kirill
Great price/quality ratio on this. I play rock and roll on it mostly, and it has enough punch for drive-demanding songs, as well as clear crisp sound for the ballads. It provides bass, but remains fresh and crisp in sound as not to sound dull. I was looking for a guitar within this price range with deep and crisp sound, and, well, I found it. The electrics pick up quite well. There are a simple equalizer and a built-in tuner - both aren't necessary, but are certainly welcome. I am fully satisfied with this purchase. I've had it for about a year and am looking forward to see how it ages. This effect shouldn't be dramatic because of the cedar top, though. There are plenty of quality reviews on youtube that you can browse where professionals will be discussing the guitar and playing it. I suggest anyone considering a purchase listen to one or two of those. That being said, I think the only way someone will be disappointed with this purchase is if it somehow doesn't fit their style of music.
